A personal kitchen diary. I try new recipes and make notes on what works and what doesn't. Sometimes I can things, and sometimes I dry herbs. This is the story of my kitchen.

Pinterest Fail! Slow Cooker Charro Beans

Pinterest Fail! Slow Cooker Charro Beans

I’ve been trying to do a few more slower cooker meals just to make weeknight dinners a little easier.

I’d never made beans in the slow cooker before, saw this recipe on on Pinterest, and thought, I like Charro beans!  I’ll give it a try.

With these ingredients, you would think it would be delicious, right?

And that picture doesn’t include the bacon! (It was cooking at the time).

It was the weirdest thing.  It cooked all day and it smelled fantastic.  Usually if something smells great, that’s a good thing.

Don’t get me wrong, it didn’t taste bad—it just had no taste at all!  Although it looked pretty.

It definitely needed salt, so I added some.  That wasn’t enough.  In the end, I added some leftover tomato sauce, garlic salt, chili powder, cumin, then garlic salt and chili powder again. Then a can of chopped green chilis.  Then I let it simmer on the stovetop some more.  Oh, and I cubed a chunk of leftover ham and added it to the pot.

In the end, it tastes really great, but they certainly aren’t Charro beans now, and all that extra fiddling sort of took the ease of using a slow cooker out of the mix.

I’m eating a bowl of it now, but I think we can safely call this a Pinterest Fail.
