A personal kitchen diary. I try new recipes and make notes on what works and what doesn't. Sometimes I can things, and sometimes I dry herbs. This is the story of my kitchen.

Putting Dried Thyme and Fennel in Jars

Putting Dried Thyme and Fennel in Jars

Our CSA also gives us a variety of herbs as part of our weekly shares. We got quite a bit of thyme this year, so I hung up one bundle to dry.  I like fresh thyme, but couldn’t use up quite as much as we […]

Smitten Kitchen’s Cold Sesame Noodles with Cucumber

Smitten Kitchen’s Cold Sesame Noodles with Cucumber

I’m a fool for anything with Asian flavors, and so I made this recipe from Smitten Kitchen tonight. A whole bunch of my favorite flavors all lined up and ready for me to use. Here’s the link to her recipe, which I made pretty much […]

Green Beans and Bacon

Green Beans and Bacon

I have had a craving for green beans and bacon.  So I pulled out a bag of green beans I had blanched and frozen, and set forth to indulge my craving.
I have been cooking bacon in the oven, so thought I would try just adding the green beans to the baking sheet. Plus a little more bacon.
After 20 minutes at 400 Fahrenheit it was clear that wasn’t really working out so I removed the beans and put the bacon back in the oven for six more minutes.
I sliced up the beans and put them in a big skillet.  They hadn’t really picked up much flavor like I thought they would, so I seasoned them with salt, and added some sliced onion, and two cloves of minced garlic.
I sautéd this over medium high heat while the bacon finished. Then added the bacon, sliced, plus some of the bacon grease.
I lowered the heat, covered the pan, and let it cook another ten minutes. It was delicious.
I probably wouldn’t do it exactly this way again, but the combo is good, so I would tweak it and do again.
Rice bowl with Thai flavors

Rice bowl with Thai flavors

I had some leftover tri-tip from the lunch the other day that I wanted to use.  I didn’t have any lettuce, so couldn’t make Thai beef salad, but I decided to use the same flavors for a rice bowl. I made up this dressing, but […]
